Case law analysis solution rated Brazil’s most innovative legaltech

A solution designed to facilitate the everyday work of lawyers through a case law search and statistical analysis tool was the grand winner of the Sao Paulo Legaltech Venture Day. The competition was organized by the FGV Sao Paulo Law School’s Center for Education and Research in Innovation (CEPI), in partnership with IE Law School, Madrid.
The tool developed by Juit aims to boost the productivity of law firms and legal departments. An honorable mention was awarded to Deep Legal, a platform that monitors and predicts the outcomes of lawsuits in Brazilian courts. The Sao Paulo Legaltech Venture Day was the Brazilian stage of a global competition to identify the world’s most innovative legaltechs. The final stage will take place in Madrid in April 2020.
The other competing companies were Freelaw, a startup that connects law firms and more experienced lawyers with freelancers; Legalboards, a specialized management tool for lawyers to use in their day-to-day work; NeuralMind, which offers a compliance solution to standardize documents and streamline legal services in different sectors; and Portal Juris, which offers a sophisticated system for tracking legal proceedings, among other services.
These legaltechs were evaluated by a jury composed of Javier de Cendra, the director of IE Law School; Jonathan Nelson, the innovation manager of the Sao Paulo Lawyers’ Association (AASP), which sponsored the event; Erik Nybo, the CEO of Edevo, a business school in Sao Paulo; Gisele Ueno, the executive director of Hi-Law Consult and one of the founders of the Curitiba branch of Legal Hackers; Nacho Mateo, the head of investor relations at IE University; Júlio Alexandrino, a representative of international boutique firm Ontier; and Guillermo Miranda, the founder of Lucius, the Mexican legaltech that won the 2019 Global Legaltech Venture Day.
Miranda expressed enthusiasm about the Brazilian legaltech ecosystem and how different players are transforming the way lawyers work through innovative technologies and tools. During the event, he gave a brief presentation about his solution, based on a digital compliance assistant, which provides daily reports based on data extracted from various public sources.
The meeting also included debates about the impact of artificial intelligence on the future of the legal profession, featuring Renato Mandaliti, the CEO of Finch, and Gisele Ueno, of the Curitiba branch of Legal Hackers. It was moderated by Marina Feferbaum, the coordinator of FGV-CEPI. Institutional speeches were also given by Alexandre Zavaglia, of Future Law, and Matheus Bombig, of the Brazilian Association of Lawtechs and Legaltechs (AB2L).
Finally, the meeting also brought together specialists to debate challenges involving investment in legaltechs. FGVLAW professor Evy Marques and Rodrigo Menezes, a partner in law firm Derraik & Menezes, contributed their experiences. This discussion was moderated by Professor Newton Campos, of FGV-CEPE.
The Sao Paulo Venture Day was sponsored by AASP and supported institutionally by Edevo, Future Law, AB2L and the Sao Paulo branch of Legal Hackers. Amazon Web Services and international boutique firm Ontier are the event’s global sponsors.
