Weekly Consumer Price Index rises at end of August

Fundação Getulio Vargas’ Weekly Consumer Price Index rose 0.53% on August 31, 2020, up 0.02 percentage points from the previous result. The indicator has increased 1.58% so far this year and 2.77% in the last 12 months.
This time, three of the index’s eight spending classes recorded increases in their variation rates. The biggest contribution came from the Education, Reading and Recreation group (-0.47% to 0.05%). In this spending class, it is worth mentioning the Airfares item, whose rate increased from -2.53% to 1.88%.
The following groups also experienced rises in their rates of variation: Food (0.72% to 0.81%) and Miscellaneous Expenses (0.43% to 0.50%). In these spending classes, there were notable results for these items: Oils and Fats (3.30% to 4.96%) and Cigarettes (0.51% to 1.06%).
On the other hand, the Housing (0.62% to 0.54%), Apparel (-0.20% to -0.45%), Transport (0.83% to 0.80%), Health and Personal Care (0.55% to 0.53%) and Communication (0.27% to 0.18%) groups recorded decreases in their rates of change. In these spending classes, the following items are worth mentioning: Residential Electricity Charges (1.42% to 1.05%), Clothes (-0.32% to -0.60%), Intercity Coach Fares (-0.55% to -1.25%), Medicines in General (0.46% to 0.35%) and Monthly Pay TV Charges (0.74% to 0.48%).
