Online event to launch new LL.M. in Contemporary Criminal Law course

The Brazilian criminal justice system has undergone various transformations in recent years, posing huge challenges for the professionals who operate in it. In light of all these changes, Fundação Getulio Vargas’ Rio de Janeiro Law School will launch a new LL.M. in Contemporary Criminal Law course at a webinar on October 9, starting at 7 pm. The meeting will look at these transformations and challenges for the criminal justice system and examine how they are affecting professional education and activities.

The course will be taught in the context of the criminal justice system of the 21st century, exploring issues such as the challenges of worldwide mass incarceration, prison overcrowding in Brazil, transnational crime, the impact of technology on crime and penal institutions, the relationship between crime and business, social, political and economic structures, legislative changes, changes in criminal policy, and new criminal justice practices. All of this points to the need for a program that examines the Brazilian penal system and its present specific characteristics.

The launch webinar will feature two of the new course’s professors: Maíra Fernandes, a criminal lawyer, the coordinator of the Brazilian Criminal Science Institute in Rio de Janeiro and vice president of the Rio de Janeiro chapter of the Brazilian Association of Criminal Lawyers (ABRACRIM); and Ricardo Saadi, a Federal Police chief. The speakers will discuss some of the main challenges of the justice system in the context of transformations in criminal law and criminal procedures in the 21st century, such as transnational crime, the impact of technology and the relationship between crime and business, social, political and electoral structures in Brazil.

The meeting, open to the public, will be moderated by Thiago Bottino, a Rio de Janeiro Law School professor, member of the Institute of Brazilian Lawyers (IAB) since 2008 and member of its Permanent Commission on Criminal Law and Human Rights Commission.
