FGV EPGE launches unparalleled course on Empirical Analysis and Economic Modeling Related to COVID-19

Fundação Getulio Vargas’ Brazilian School of Economics and Finance (FGV EPGE) presents a free, unparalleled course on Empirical Analysis and Economic Modeling Related to COVID-19. Coordinated by professors Alexandre Madureira and Rubens Penha Cysne, the course will be taught through a series of talks by professors and researchers from national and international centers. These speakers will present their papers on models related to economic issues and COVID-19, involving mathematical, statistical and computational techniques.

The course is open to FGV graduate students and professors, as well as researchers in the area, subject to availability and approval by the coordinators.

It will run from October 8 to December 17. More information about the course can be obtained from EPGE’s secretariat via email.

The following papers will be presented by their respective authors: 

  • October 8 – “Fair Allocation of Vaccines, Ventilators and Antiviral Treatments: Leaving No Ethical Value Behind in Health Care Rationing,” by Tayfun Sonmez (Boston College)
  • October 22 – “The importance of testing and age-specific policies during the COVID-19 pandemic,” by Cézar Santos (FGV EPGE)
  • October 29 – “Firm Behavior during an Epidemic,” by Luiz Brotherhood (University of Barcelona)
  • November 5 – “Short-Term Covid-19 Forecast for Latecomers,” by Marcelo Medeiros (PUC)
  • November 12 – “Simulating the Effects of Social Distancing Policies in Sao Paulo, Using a SEIR model,” by Naercio Menezes-Filho (INSPER, University of Sao Paulo)
  • November 19 – “Social distancing, temperature, BCG and the evolution of COVID-19: a panel-model analysis,” by Rubens Penha Cysne / Eduardo Campos (FGV EPGE, ENCE)
  • November 26 – “A multigenerational SIR model: some estimates for Brazil,” by Rubens Penha Cysne / Alexandre Madureira (FGV EPGE, LNCC)
  • December 3 – “Asset Prices and Aggregate Demand in a ‘Covid-19-Shock’: A Model of Endogenous Risk Intolerance and LSAPs,” by Alp Simsek (MIT)
  • December 17 – TBA – Flavio Toxvaerd (Cambridge)
