New course discusses future of Brazil-China relations from political, legal and development perspectives

The Brazil-China Study Center at Fundação Getulio Vargas’ Rio de Janeiro Law School is accepting applications for a new course called “The Future of Brazil-China Relations: Law, Politics and Development.” The program aims to provide the knowledge necessary to understand contemporary China, its internal transformations and external challenges in legal, economic and diplomatic fields, taking into account the historical and cultural foundations of China’s governance model. The classes will be taught live, via Zoom, from November 23 to 27, from 9 am to midday.
The purpose of the course is to qualify Brazilian professionals to develop a productive and long-term relationship with Chinese business people and officials. The Asian country is now Brazil’s main trade partner and the World Bank and IMF forecast that its economy will grow between 7.9% and 8.2% in 2021.
The program is coordinated by Professor Evandro Menezes de Carvalho, one of the leading Brazilian experts on the Asian country, where he served as a visiting professor at the Center for BRICS Studies at Fudan University and senior scholar at Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. The course will also feature international speakers such as China’s consul general in Rio de Janeiro, Li Yang; the director of the Representative Office of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, Zhang Xin; and Professor Ban Tianke of Fudan University, Shanghai.
“China is preparing its 14th Five-Year Plan, which will cover 2021 to 2025. This plan will establish what the Chinese government calls a new development standard and set its priorities for the next five years. Given that Brazil and China are discussing a new 10-year Cooperation Plan for 2022 to 2031, it is essential to understand the current international context and China’s internal dynamics in order to envision how to take advantage of new opportunities going forward,” says Professor Carvalho.
The course will be taught in Portuguese, but the lectures with international guests will be held in English. For more information about the course’s program and to apply, click here.
