FGV professors appointed to committee of legal experts to improve anti-racism legislation

Silvio de Almeida, a professor at Fundação Getulio Vargas’ Sao Paulo School of Business Administration (FGV EAESP) and guest professor at the FGV Sao Paulo Law School; and Thiago Amparo, a professor at the FGV Sao Paulo Law School and FGV School of International Relations (FGV RI) and coordinator of the Center for Research on Racial Justice, have been appointed to a Committee of Legal Experts set up by the House of Representatives to fight racism. The committee’s goal is to evaluate and propose strategies to improve legislation to tackle structural and institutional racism in Brazil.
The committee will have 120 days to present its findings, although this period may be extended for another 120 days at its chairman’s request. Professor Silvio de Almeida will be the committee’s rapporteur and the chairman will be Justice Benedito Gonçalves of the Superior Court of Appeals. The deputy chairman will be Judge João Benedito da Silva of the Paraíba State Court of Appeals. The appointments were announced by the speaker of the House of Representatives, Rodrigo Maia, at the end of 2020.
The Center for Research on Racial Justice recently received US$100,000 from Google to fund projects designed to promote racial justice and tackle violence against black people in Brazil.
