FGV and ABREN launch unparalleled MBA in Brazil about energy recovery and waste processing

Fundação Getulio Vargas and the Brazilian Association for Energy Recovery from Waste (ABREN) have formed a partnership to run a new course titled Executive MBA in Administration – Energy Recovery and Waste Processing. The program, the first of its kind in Brazil, aims to promote best practices in integrated and sustainable management of solid waste.

“The program was completed customized for those who seek to promote best practices for integrated and sustainable management of solid waste through recycling, composting and energy recovery. It will train participants to develop businesses in a market that is projected to receive investments of R$145 billion in the next 12 years, according to the Climate Bonds Initiative,” says Yuri Schmitke, ABREN’s executive president.

Gesner Oliveira, a professor at Fundação Getulio Vargas’ Sao Paulo School of Business Administration (FGV EAESP) and coordinator of the new course, says that this subject has become more relevant given the conditions created by the sanitation legal framework, introduced by Law 14,026 of 2020.

“The new sanitation legal framework obliges all municipal governments to structure public-private partnerships if they delegate the public service of urban solid waste collection, transportation and environmentally friendly disposal. In addition, Brazil has the world’s biggest potential to produce biogas but it only harnesses 2%, according to the World Biogas Association. These are the conditions that will revolutionize the waste sector in Brazil,” explains Oliveira.

The partnership features a highly qualified faculty, including some Portuguese professors, almost all of whom have a master’s and doctorate, as well as extensive market experience. The course will take place remotely, through live, synchronous Zoom classes and asynchronous activities performed in FGV’s “e-Class” virtual environment. At the end of the course, participants will receive guidance and support to prepare a Business Plan.
