The American economist Eric Maskin, Economics Nobel Prize winner in 2007, visited yesterday, July 28, FGV/EPGE - Graduate School of Economics. He attended a lunch in the Main Hall with FGV?s President, Carlos Ivan Simonsen Leal; Vice President Sergio Quintella Franklin; the director of FGV/EPGE, Rubens Penha Cysne; and the remaining directors and professors of FGV's units, and authorities and external guests. After some meetings with undergraduate and graduate students and the faculty of FGV/EPGE, Professor Maskin gave a lecture on the theme Election and Strategic Voting: Condorcet and Borda?.During the event, he analyzed electoral systems adopted in most countries to choose their presidents, senators and representatives from a theoretical point of view and presented his studies investigating the peculiarities of these systems to determine which would be the most desirable. According to him, Condorcet and Borda are the best methods to prevent strategic voting, which occurs when the voter votes for one candidate to prevent the victory of another, even though he/she prefers a third party.In the presentation, Maskin criticized the electoral system implemented in Brazil and France, with voting in two rounds, and defended the system of Majority Rule or Condorcet - whereby voters list all candidates in order of preference.
