The researcher of the Center for Technology and Society (STS) of Rio de Janeiro Law School (FGV DIREITO RIO), Jhessica Reia, is currently participating (July 8-12) in the International Congress Underground Music Scenes and DIY Cultures at the University of Porto, in Portugal. The event gathers more than 160 researchers from 30 countries to discuss urban musical cultures, youth cultures, contemporary art creations, transformations of the underground creative universe and advancement of new technologies.Jhessica will present the article I've got straight edge: Discussions on aging and gender in an underground music scene - a reflection on her Master's Degree thesis, which explored the transformations caused by the internet in an urban subculture ruled by the logic of the do-it-yourselfers in various fields, such as music production, copyrights, music sharing, promotion, as well as identity and gender relations. It is an extremely important experience, since the spaces to discuss urban musical cultures are still scarce, although this topic is gaining more visibility and relies in the interaction with various disciplines such as Communication, Sociology and Law. It is essential to be able to discuss one's research with people who can contribute to your reflection, build networks and share knowledge, explained the researcher. The conference also includes activities such as concerts, performances, fanzines (magazines edited by fans) and documentaries. Among the speakers we can highlight the participation of Will Straw and Andy Bennett, widely recognized for their work with musical scenes and youth culture.
