Professor of Global Law at São Paulo Law School (DIREITO SP), Salem Nasser, was invited by Folha de São Paulo to deliver a short course on Iran and the Middle East to journalists of the International Editorial Division of the newspaper.Nasser began his presentation by responding to a provocation stated in the title of the lecture - which raised the hypothesis that we were witnessing a second revolution in Iran. Many thought of the 2009 demonstrations as being this second revolutionary moment and that, if the revolution to which we refer to is a turn toward moderation, Iran had already experienced such a moment, perhaps in a more intense way, under Khatami, recalled Salem, who also spoke of the importance of having in mind the strength of the Revolution of 79 and register its two major features: the government of Islam and a clear desire for political autonomy. Iran cannot be understood without considering these features blended with a deep pride of its own history and a sense of pragmatism, he emphasized.Iran and the WestAccording to Salem Nasser, the current approach between Iran and the West is much more the consequence of changes in the position of the United States and its allies than by the Islamic Republic.  Whilst it is true that the Iranians sent positive signals that help the West justify its actions, it is also true that the Iranians have not substantially changed their attitudes toward nuclear program and Rouhani is nonetheless a president out of the heart of the Iranian political system, he said. The change in the West's attitude is still considered by the professor the consequence of the turnaround of the power balance in the Middle East, as the evolution of the Syrian crisis clearly demonstrated the partial victory of Iran and its allies, the limits of American power and the strong comeback of Russia's regional policy. The meeting took place in the auditorium of Folha de São Paulo, in São Paulo.
