The professor of Rio de Janeiro Law School (FGV DIREITO RIO), Evandro Menezes de Carvalho, will give today, April 15, a lecture at the Institute of South Asian Studies, of University of Sichuan, China. The invitation originated from the Center for BRICS Studies, of Fudan University, in which Evandro is a guest professor. The Centre integrates a network of universities which research topics of interest to BRICS countries - Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The lecture aims to discuss domestic and international issues which are in Brazil and China's agenda. Evandro will talk about the prospects of the relationship between these countries in the official and public diplomacy context, and the search for a reform of international institutions to allow Brazil and China to participate more in the definition of the rules governing the relations between the countries. Regarding the domestic context, the professor will analyze the urbanization challenges of major cities, the promotion of a quality of life with a healthy environment, the problems of food and energy security, the aging of populations and their impact on the national economy.Brazil and China are two large countries, both economically and territorially, facing similar internal problems and an international agenda with convergence points if we compare them to developed countries. The geographical and cultural distance between them has been an obstacle that must, however, be overcome, explained Evandro. He also pointed out that China today is the largest investor and buyer of Brazil - which highlights the importance of diplomatic relations with the Asian country. The professor also pointed out that the relations go beyond trade, from a strategic agenda with great potential.Politically, Brazil and China share common goals concerning the reform of international institutions. The involvement of both countries in the BRICS and the G20 is evidence that they seek an appropriate and effective integration into the main international decision-making processes. Brazil will also host this year the meeting on governance and Internet security, and the Summit of the BRICS. These two events address issues of interests to the Chinese government. We have two good opportunities to bring forward a common agenda that will bring the two countries closer together, concluded Evandro.
