The professor of Business Law and Capital Markets of São Paulo Law School, Mariana Pargendler, has been to Columbia Law School for the Oxford Handbook Conference, where she presented the paper Corporate Governance in Emerging Markets.  The study addressed the extent and change engines in the corporate governance of emerging countries by analyzing the role of the Legislative and Judiciary powers and regulatory agencies, and other alternative mechanisms of institutional reform.  In this sense, the research highlights the importance of conducting a functional analysis of the impact of different corporate governance practices, since similar rules can generate different effects, depending on the context in which they operate. The professor highlights that the importance of developing countries in international investments grew to such an extent in recent decades that, in 2012, these countries absorb most of the global flows of foreign direct investment for the first time in history. In this context, foreign investors started having a deep interest, both in learning the corporate governance structures of emerging countries and understanding how these practices can increase the value of companies, explained Mariana. The papers presented at the conference will be published in the Oxford Handbook of Corporate Law and Governance - edited by Professors Jeffrey Gordon, from Columbia Law School, and Wolf-Georg Ringe, from Copenhagen Business School and University of Oxford.  The publication brings together works by more than 50 Corporate Law professors of the best academic institutions in the world such as Yale, Harvard, Stanford, Columbia, Oxford, Insead and London School of Economics, besides FGV.To read the book, please click here. The Oxford Handbook Conference took place from March 21-22, in New York.
