CPDOC's projects receive FAPERJ funding

Three of the research projects that make up the activities of the newly established Laboratory for the Study of Institutions (LEI) of the School of Social Sciences (FGV/CPDOC) were awarded with funding from Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Rio de Janeiro (FAPERJ). The projects selected address repression and prosecution of crimes against the economy during the military dictatorship, cases of missing children and teenagers in Rio de Janeiro and institutions of the Brazilian legal field - authored by the coordinators of LEI, Professors Angela Moreira and Letícia Ferreira and Marco Aurélio Vannucchi. In the survey O pão, a balança e a segurança nacional: repressão e julgamento dos crimes contra a economia popular durante a ditadura militar brasileira (1966)? (The bread, the scale and national security: repression and judgement of crimes against the economy during the Brazilian military dictatorship (1966), the historian Angela Moreira aims to identify and analyze the political environment that allowed crimes against businesses to be equally compared to crime against national security; identify the repression network to such crimes, and learn about the decision patterns of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) and the Superior Military Court (STM) in the habeas corpus trials requested by traders arrested for crimes such as selling bread under the weight stipulated at Sunab's table, for example. The anthropologist Letícia Ferreira, with the study Formalidades, moralidades e disputas: uma abordagem etnográfica da administração de casos de crianças e adolescentes desaparecidos no Rio de Janeiro? (Formalities, morals and disputes: an ethnographic approach to management of cases of missing children and teenagers in Rio de Janeiro), aims to analyze the bureaucratic procedures adopted in a specialized public service to understand to what extent the formalities stipulated by them, articulate, adapt or oppose specific moralities around people who are going through the experience of a missing family member. Finally, the project Instituições do campo jurídico brasileiro: o caso da Ordem dos Advogados do Brasil (OAB)? (Institutions of the Brazilian legal field: the case of the Brazilian Bar Association - OAB), of the historian Marco Aurélio Vannucchi, investigates the performance of OAB in the first government of Getúlio Vargas (1930-1945). The research aims to contribute to the understanding of the nature of the relations established between the State and society in the period, as well as reveal changes among Law graduates, such as the rise of an anti-liberal legal elite and the partial co-optation of the category for state bureaucracy. The Laboratory for the Study of InstitutionsLEI is a multidisciplinary space of debate and knowledge production about institutions, such as state agencies, civil society organizations, associations and professional bodies, among others. Its objective is to gather and disseminate knowledge about theoretical and methodological issues related to the historical, anthropological and sociological study of institutions.
