Today we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the coup that overthrew President João Goulart and founded a military dictatorship in Brazil. The period between 1964 and 1985, the so-called lead years, through the advocacy's perspective, is the subject of the book Advocacia em Tempos Difíceis? (Advocacy in Tough Times) - an initiative of the Marcas da Memória project of Amnesty Commission coordinated by professors Paula Spieler (Rio de Janeiro Law School) and Rafael Mafei Rabelo Queiroz (São Paulo Law School). The book Advocacia em Tempos Difíceis? (Advocacy in Tough Times) aims to examine the legal strategies used by political prisoners' lawyers during the military dictatorship from 1964 to 1985. Coordinated by professors Paula Spieler (Rio de Janeiro Law School) and Rafael Mafei Rabelo Queiroz (São Paulo Law School), the book includes 34 interviews, from the state of Ceará to the state of Rio Grande do Sul, and was supported by the Amnesty Commission of the Ministry of Justice. The interviews revealed that habeas corpus, although formally abolished with the adoption of the AI-5, continued to be used by many lawyers, with the name or under the designation 'petition', which has been extremely important in cases of missing politicians, explained Paula Spieler.Another problem of the period was that the State's institutions were dominated by the repressive power, which made lawyers' work difficult and risky. This book is a groundbreaking work that focuses on the role of lawyers, not the victims. Our approach focuses the Law professional who needed to defend his/her clients with the military regime's own laws, stated Rafael Mafei.Alynne Nunes, André Payar, Catarina Freitas and Mariana de Carvalho, the latter two students at Rio de Janeiro Law School, also participated in the research. The publishing company Juruá was responsible for publishing and printing the book.To read the whole book, please click here.
