A survey conducted by the Brazilian Institute of Economics (FGV/IBRE) points out that this year Christmas dinner in Brazil will be 8.10% more expensive than in 2012.According to IBRE, the inflation on the products consumed at the supper increased more than the average inflation recorded by the Consumer Price Index 10 (IPC-10) from January 2013 to December 2013, which was 5.48%.The Institute economist and responsible for the report, André Braz, identifies items that presented the highest price increases: wheat flour (30.56%), potatoes (21.07%) and fruits (15.41 %). For consumers who wish to save, it's worth checking promotional catalogues before going shopping and, whenever possible, replacing products by traditional brands for alternative quality brands. Shopping on Christmas Eve is not recommended, says André.However, there is good news. The prices for some important products in Christmas Hampers presented decreases or an increase below the average inflation, such as onions (-29.42%), soybean oil (-19.39%), cod (-9.69%), rice (-5.13%), pork leg (3.44%) and wine (3.87%).Moreover, even though higher than last year, the average price of gifts between January and December 2013 was below the inflation measured by the IPC-10 - 3.78% against 5.48%.
