São Paulo Law School discusses 10 years of the Disarmament Statute

Conducted in partnership with Sou da Paz Institute and Igarapé Institute, the Seminar for the 10 years of the Disarmament Statute - Advances and Challenges for the reduction of homicides in Brazil discussed the results of two unpublished research articles concerning crimes with firearms which occurred in São Paulo.

On December 12-13, São Paulo Law School (DIREITO GV) welcomed experts to discuss the 10th anniversary of the Disarmament Statute. Conducted in partnership with Sou da Paz Institute and Igarapé Institute, the Seminar for the 10 years of the Disarmament Statute - Advances and Challenges for the reduction of homicides in Brazil discussed the results of two unpublished research articles concerning crimes with firearms which occurred in São Paulo.The first one makes an analysis of homicides in 2012 and the 1st half of 2013 in the city of São Paulo, with information on location, conditions, profile of victims and perpetrators, and use of weapons.The second study shows the profile of guns used in crimes in the state capital, such as category, type, size, brand, nationality and year of manufacture, and how they are classified by use for each crime. In addition, a special section with details on the weapons of greater firepower was presented.The Brazilian scenario was also theme of the event. On the first day, the evolution of homicides in Brazil in the last decade and the involvement of firearms in such cases were discussed, in addition to a discussion on the Weapons Parliamentary Inquiry Commission - which took place in 2011 in Rio de Janeiro.The seminar ended with an analysis of the 10 years of the Statute, in which the impacts of the law, its advances and challenges were discussed. The goal is to set up an agenda for the coming years with a focus on the national policy on gun control.
