Director of São Paulo Law School is now columnist for Folha de São Paulo

The director of FGV's São Paulo Law School (DIREITO GV), Oscar Vilhena Vieira, is the new columnist of the legal issues section of the newspaper Folha de São Paulo. He will alternate with the lawyer Luís Francisco Carvalho Filho, specialized in Criminal, Electoral and Constitutional Law. Both will write every 15 days, on Saturdays, replacing the lawyer Walter Ceneviva, who has written this column since 1978 and, as of this week, began to sporadically cooperate with the newspaper.According to Vilhena, the central challenge in the legal debate is to discuss the numerous ways in which Law and its institutions affect our lives. Special attention will be given to the great moral issues of political and economic nature, such as those often faced by the Federal Supreme Court (STF). I'll also try to analyze the idiosyncrasies of our legal institutions, which in many circumstances act as obstacles to the expansion of citizens' autonomy and their own economic development, explains the professor.Vilhena also highlights the role of new information technologies in destabilizing law teaching methods and practices, which directly help them to open up to wider horizons. Understanding how such a traditional and provincial profession moves in a globalized and interconnected world through new forms of communication is a challenge for anyone who wants to address law nowadays. The professor?s first column will be published on December 14th.
