Contemporary Topics series of Graduate School of Economics debates Human Rights

This Monday, October 1st, FGV/EPGE - Graduate School of Economics held the lecture Human Rights, with the professor and coordinator of Institutional Relations of FGV's Rio de Janeiro Law School (DIREITO RIO), Paula Bartolini Spieler.Paula started the lecture explaining about what Human Rights is about and stated that, although there is a theory that explains why Human Rights are seen in a negative way in Brazil (unlike what happens in the rest of the world), she believes that the Human Rights movement has emerged in the Country as a fight especially focused against the torture and forced disappearances that were practiced during the military dictatorship. It was understood; therefore, as a left-wing movement in favor of political prisoners. When democracy was established, Human Rights remained associated with the defense of prisoners, but of common prisoners, she explains. However, also according to the professor, the media contributes to a greater understanding of the theme, which involves a set of rights that would guarantee a decent life to people, for the simple fact that they are human beings, as well as a plurality of actors.Paula also examined four Brazilian cases of Human Rights violation that have been taken to the Inter-American System of Human Rights Protection. This is the case of Maria da Penha Fernandes, in 2001 - whose personal history inspired the creation of Law No. 11,340 of September 2006, which protects women against domestic violence and became known as Maria da Penha Law, - Ximenes Lopes, in 2006, Gomes Lund and others, in 2010, and Precautionary Measures of Indigenous Communities of Xingu River in 2011.The event took place at the 12th floor of the auditorium of FGV's headquarters in Rio de Janeiro. The next meeting will take place on October 22 and be attended by professor Clovis de Faro, who will talk about financial mathematics and the judiciary.
