President of Empresa Olímpica Municipal talks about leadership and management at FGV

FGV's Brazilian School of Public and Business Administration (FGV/EBAPE) welcomed, on September 24, the president of Empresa Olímpica Municipal (Municipal Olympic Company - EOM), Maria Silvia Bastos Marques, for the lecture Business Management and Career Development, in which she spoke about her career path, leadership attributes and the role of EOM in the preparation for the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.Empresa Olímpica Municipal is the most complex venture I have taken over, from a management point of view. It is a unique experience for the city of Rio de Janeiro and for anyone who is participating in this process. It is a major management case, which involves multiple partners and activities, and which makes team work essential so that we are able to get there, she said.Maria Silvia emphasized that the greatest challenge of EOM is to keep people motivated during a short period, since the project has a defined day and time to end. Empresa Olímpica was created by law and we have to deliver all projects a year before the event. It is difficult to keep people motivated, under strong pressure, in a project that has a deadline to end. We do not have the time to develop careers because we need people ready, professionals who come in ready for action. In a common company you have time to develop a leader, thinking in the long term, in succession, career, a situation quite different from our case, she explained. She also spoke about the appreciation of skills nowadays. In the past the world used to place high value on technical aspects. Not today. People, the companies and the organizations value flexibility, the ability to learn and interpersonal relationships. There is a series of characteristics and skills which in the past were not important and today they are, she said. The event - organized by professors Carlos Otavio Quintella and Marco Tulio Zanini - is part of the series of lectures on Leadership and Strategy pertaining to the Executive Master's program in Business Administration of the Brazilian School of Public and Business Administration (MEX), which brings together leaders of large public and private organizations who seek to ponder over management challenges and dilemmas in Brazil. The video of the lecture Business Management and Career Development is now available in full on FGV/EBAPE's channel on YouTube. The lecture took place at 7 pm, at FGV's headquarters in Rio de Janeiro.
