On August 8 and 9, FGV's international director, Bianor Cavalcanti, participated in the 1st Brazilian Meeting of Public Administration, offered by the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN). Next to academic leaders from all over the country, in addition to professors and students of graduate programs in Administration (PPGA) and Public Management (PPGP) at the Center for Applied Social Sciences (CCSA) of UFRN, the objective was to discuss the creation of the Brazilian Society for Public Administration (SBAP). Under the theme The Organization of the Public Administration Area in Brazil, the guests discussed the importance of this area as a disciplinary field with its own identity and its relevance to the training, qualification and professional exercise in Public Management practice - within governmental organizations and their relations with society. The panel held during the event, also included EAESP's coordinator of the Professional Master's Degree in Management and Public Policies, Regina Pacheco, and representatives of various Brazilian institutions, among them, University of São Paulo (USP), University of Brasília (UnB) and Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF). For Bianor Cavalcanti, the creation of the SBAP is in line with an international organization and articulation movement of the relevant players in a disciplinary field that grows and consolidates itself as a space to discuss Public Administration theories, methods and practices. According to him, reference organizations include The International Institute of Administrative Sciences, Centro Latinoamericano de Administración para el Desarrollo (CLAD) and the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA). The meeting - which resulted in the establishment of SBAP - further settled the statute of the entity and the election of its first executive board, which will be chaired by the professor of Universidade Salvador (UNIFACS), Élvia Fadul, and vice-chaired by UFF's professor, Frederico Lustosa da Costa. According to Élvia, the Brazilian Society for Public Administration shall fill an important gap by strengthening relations among Public Administration professionals and the academic world of discipline, leading both to reflection and shared action in a renewed commitment toward the society. The event took place at UFRN campus in Natal, in Brazil. *In the photo, Bianor Cavalcanti (fifth from right to left), with other academic leaders.
