FGV's Brazilian School of Public and Business Administration (EBAPE) welcomed, on August 6, the advisor to the presidency of Petrobras and former president of the company in Uruguay, Irani Varella. He gave the lecture Strategy and Leadership: an analysis from a sociocultural point of view, in which he talked about strategy and sustainability, in addition to his nearly 40 years of professional experience in Petrobras. My goal here today is to generate, in some way, commotion, reflection. I'll talk about strategy and sustainability, because today we cannot talk about the strategy of any company or institution without addressing this issue. And in Brazil we have good examples of sustainable companies, said the advisor. Varella also explained the leadership model of Petrobras and how it is possible to create strategies in a working environment where it is difficult to fire people. In Petrobras, the manager has a lot of power to exchange people among the departments. I've always had this freedom. Still according to him, there is a serious problem in management and leadership, which is the premise that people have to obey. They do not have to obey, but cooperate with the best job possible. In this issue of leadership, dialog is essential. Not a dialog to seek a consensus or harmony, but a dialog based on the values and objectives of the institution, added Varella. The lecture, organized by professors Carlos Otavio Quintella and Marco Tulio Zanini, was open to the public and oriented at professionals, students, academics and researchers.                                                                                                                                         The meeting is part of the series of lectures on Leadership and Strategy - an activity part of the Executive Masters program in Business Management at the Brazilian School of Public and Business Administration (MEX), which brings together leaders of large public and private organizations in order to ponder over management challenges in Brazil.
