According to a survey by FGV Projetos, the total expenditure by Brazilian families on textile products was BRL 102 billion last year - which represents 3.7% of consumer spending in these families.  Almost half of the spending (45%) refers to the purchase of articles for women.  After that comes menswear (36%), children clothes (17%) and textiles and haberdashery articles (2%).  The region of Brazil that showed the greatest spending on textiles is the Southeast (46.3%), followed by the Northeast, South, North and Midwest.  The research also indicates that the GDP of the textile chain in 2012 reached USD 38.3 billion, distributed in manufacturing of textile products (BRL 8.1 billion), making garments and accessories (BRL 9.5 billion) and retail of textiles and clothing (BRL 20.7 billion).  The survey was commissioned by the Brazilian Association of Textile Retail (ABVTEX).
