The co-founder and executive chairman of Twitter, Jack Dorsey, was at FGV in São Paulo last week to chat with students and professors of the institution. For the first time in Brazil, Dorsey talked about the history of Twitter, from its origin to present day.

Discussing the impact of the information network on people, business and society, Dorsey said: Twitter has changed relationships among people, the power is in the hands of the receiver of the message and it is up to them to interpret it.  He further commented on the success of microblogging in the country. Brazil is one of our largest and most important markets, with many Twitter early adopters. It's a very social country, he said.

Asked about the use of social networks in Arab Spring, Dorsey emphasized the power of Twitter (and social media) to make people aware of aspects of reality that would be out of their reach. The more we understand how people live around the world, the more empathy we have for them. He also added, regarding the use of such media in social and political claims, We will increasingly see social media being used for these purposes.

Dorsey has already been recognized as one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time magazine and named an outstanding innovator under the age of 35 by Technology Review, published by MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology).

Today, Twitter has over 200 million active users worldwide, who send over 400 million tweets per day.

The event took place with the support of IDE in the Grand Hall of EAESP, FGV's School of Business Administration in São Paulo.
