Brazilian Public Security Crisis under debate

FGV’s Department of Public Policy Analysis (DAPP) will host a panel to discuss Public Security in Brazil on March 22, at 12 PM, at FGV’s main office auditorium in Rio de Janeiro, titled “Justice reinvestment: Brainstorming alternatives for Public Security investments.” Based on an analysis of Brazil’s current law enforcement and justice models, the discussion will focus on alternatives to prevent and fight crime, and promote public investment in the sector. The panel will feature DAPP researchers and experts in the field.
During the event, DAPP will also unveil its latest tool — “DataCrime: Decoding Public Security in Brazil” —, which, in summary, offers a broad overview of the sector based on data published by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the Unified Health System (SUS), the Brazilian National Prison Department (Depen), and the Brazilian Yearbook on Public Security. With a single digital environment easily accessed, DataCrime provides a nationwide and regional overview of public security issues, correlating interpretations on the occurrence of crimes, deaths, security personnel contingency and the prison system.
The lecture kicks off a monthly series of debates on public policies and innovation. Building upon unprecedented applied research, the meetings will be led by DAPP researchers and special guests, who will discuss innovative initiatives and relevant topics of the public debate. The event will have free admission for students, scholars and the general public.
