FGV hosts president of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences to discuss new collaborative projects
CASS is China’s leading think tank in the social sciences, with 3,200 researchers at 31 institutes and one university.

On April 15, the president of FGV, Carlos Ivan Simonsen Leal, hosted a meeting with the president of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), Gao Xiang. CASS is China’s leading think tank in the social sciences, with 3,200 researchers at 31 institutes and one university. The meeting strengthened the partnership between the institutions and paved the way for some possible new collaborative projects.
Since 2013, FGV and CASS have engaged in fruitful academic cooperation, including organizing a book titled “The Middle-Income Trap: Views from Brazil and China,” co-authored with FGV IBRE and published by FGV. This work resulted in a significant exchange of ideas and economic policies between economists from the two countries. Eleven years after this initiative, new global geopolitical and economic challenges were discussed during the meeting on April 15, particularly the continued emergence of the Chinese economy and the importance of bilateral trade in the current context of protectionism and global polarization.
These discussions will lead to new joint research projects and events, scheduled to begin later this year, amid celebrations of the 50th anniversary of Sino-Brazilian relations and FGV’s 80th anniversary.
The Chinese institution was represented at the meeting by its managing director and international director, as well as the directors of CASS’Institute of World Economics and Politics and its Institute of Latin American Studies. FGV was represented by its international director, Marlos Lima; the dean of its School of Social Sciences, Celso Castro; its information technology director, Luciana Marroni; its international manager, Klaus Stier; and its international project coordinator, Michele Luz.
