About
The Laboratory of Sports Studies - LESP (FGV CPDOC) will hold a lecture by a researcher in the area of Social Communication, prof. Fausto Amaro - PhD from the University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) - who will present his research on the coverage made by the Rio de Janeiro press about the sporting event at the turn of the 19th to 20th century.
The presentation will address the production of narratives about the Olympic games in the Rio de Janeiro press between the 1890s and 1930s, with the objective of discussing the process of constituting an Olympic field in Rio de Janeiro. The journalistic texts of Rio de Janeiro periodicals will be presented as documentary sources, selected for their relevance and the highlight given to the Olympic games. In order to understand the arrival and spread of the Olympic movement in Brazil, the arguments of the press are followed to stimulate Brazil's involvement with the international Olympic circuit, which revolved around three basic points: modernity, civilization and race.
