FGV's Study Centers are research and knowledge production units that focus on specific topics of interest to Brazilian society. They are made up of FGV professors, researchers and students who work together to develop high-level studies and research.

CERI

In a context where there are many challenges in regulation and governance, CERI provides Brazilian society data and analyses for the best possible understanding of the infrastructure sectors. Aiming to align all of the institution’s available resources at FGV, the Center is a reference as a think tank for regulated sectors of the infrastructure industry.  The Center relies on an interdisciplinary team of economists, lawyers and institutional experts, which has significantly contributed to improving the understanding of the role of governance in state companies. The Center has also analyzed the impact of privatization on the quality of services, the degree of improvement of the decision-making process by regulatory agencies, and other sectors of relevance connected to economic growth in Brazil.  CERI has also expanded its influence to other countries in Latin America, becoming an important mediator in the region’s discussion of infrastructure.

FGV CDMC

FGV’s Center for the Development of Mathematics and Science was founded in 2017 with the mission of identifying talented youth at Brazilian public schools, especially non-selective ones, in order to encourage them to do undergraduate and graduate courses at FGV so as to enrich the body of scientists and professionals with advanced qualifications that the country needs. The center also aims to map excellent non-selective public schools, in line with their performance in Brazilian Ministry of Education ratings and Knowledge Olympiads, in order to contribute to training their professionals, enhancing their school management and preparing their students.

Center for Energy Studies

FGV Energy, FGV’s Center for Energy Studies, was created in 2013 to expand knowledge of energy issues in an interdisciplinary way, establishing FGV as one of the main think tanks in this area. Its aim is to promote the strategic positioning of FGV in the energy sector, to be a leading figure in the discussion of energy in the country, and to support the preparation of public policies and regulation for development from a geopolitical and sustainable perspective.

Center for Growth and Economic Development Studies

FGV Growth & Development is an FGV study center dedicated to research in the area of economic growth and development. The center’s research focuses on the Brazilian economy, based on theoretical knowledge and accumulated experience, especially in the last two decades, and uses comparisons with successful examples of developed economies and emerging markets.  One of the center’s main objects of research is a special emphasis on the need to understand the reasons why some economies are richer than others, as well as to understand what makes a country grow rapidly, while others remain stagnant. In this comparative context, the center attempts to understand the recent experience of Brazil. In this regard, FGV Growth & Development works to identify, suggest and influence the creation of economic policies aimed at removing obstacles to Brazil’s economic development.

FGV IIU

FGV International Intelligence Unit

FGV’s International Intelligence Unit produces information about issues that involve an international dimension, with the aim of opening new markets and partnerships abroad for FGV, as well as attracting intelligent solutions, ideas and investment to the country. IIU generates knowledge on important international or current issues considered vital to Brazilian interests. It is a downsized unit with a small team of select technical experts – about half of international origin – and a group of top level advisers, including renowned executives, former Ministers of State, ambassadors and directors of large public companies.

FGV Social

The mission of FGV Social is to contribute to inclusive development in Brazil, connecting applied research to the debate within society and to the implementation of public policies. Addressing the most pressing Brazilian social issues in an integrated way, it acts to diffuse knowledge and inspire new inclusive practices. It is responsible for providing training and specialized advice for projects in different areas, in partnership with government entities, companies and civil society organizations, in Brazil and abroad. Through empirical research, in particular that based on large public microdatabases, and through the design and evaluation of public policies, FGV Social believes it can identify and promote new transformations in society. The approach aligns several actors and instruments, in order to holistically improve different dimensions of the day to day life of the population.

Center for Transport, Logistics and Urban Mobility Studies

FGV Transportes, Fundação Getulio Vargas´ Center for Transport, Logistics and Urban Mobility Studies, is intended to expand the knowledge on cargo and passenger transport issues, in an interdisciplinary way, positioning FGV as one of the main think tanks of the sector. Its goal is to place FGV as protagonist in the discussion on transports in Brazil, subsidizing the preparation of public policies, applied research, studies, projects and action plans for the country’s economic, social and environmental development. FGV Transportes´ strategy is the approximation of public and private, cargo and passengers transport sector, in order to seek, in a structured way, the survey of themes for applied research, publications, seminars, debates, technical notes, statistics, studies and projects.
