Graduate Seminars 2018, with Luiz Gustavo de Andrade Alves (USP)

FGV’s Brazilian School of Public and Business Administration (EBAPE) will host another edition of the “Graduate Seminars” program on May 23, at 10 a.m. The next guest is professor Luiz Gustavo de Andrade Alves (USP), who will discuss the paper “The dynamical structure of political corruption networks”. The professor’s research focuses on breaking down the inner workings of complex systems using statistical physics methods, network theory and data science. He holds a PhD and a Master’s degree in Physics from the State University of Maringá (UEM). He is currently a postdoc at the University of São Paulo.
According to professor Alketa Peci, who coordinates EBAPE’s graduate seminars this semester, the study reveals the dynamics of relationships between politicians, entrepreneurs, foreign exchange professionals, and other players involved in corruption scandals between 1987 and 2014. In addition to the relevance of the study itself, given the significance of the topic in the national scenario, the research also helps understand the potential of data science for applied social sciences issues, as well as for best practices in the public sector.
The purpose of the “Graduate Seminars” program is to promote high-level debate regarding ongoing research in the field of Administration, Public Administration and related areas. In addition to the School’s MSc and PhD students, non-EBAPE researchers and PhD candidates are also welcome to participate. The Graduate Seminars is held throughout the academic year, depending on the availability of guest researchers.
