FGV’s School of Social Sciences (FGV CPDOC) professor Ynaê Salim participated in a chat with French-Cameroonian writer Léonora Miano on June 11. During the event, which took place at Livraria Travessa, in Botafogo (Rio de Janeiro), the author launched her novel “Season of the Shadow”.

The book tells the story of the Mulongo tribe amidst the slave trade and the decimation of people on the African coast in the 16th century. It is a strong, exciting and realistic novel, because it is based on a 2010 Unesco Memory of the World heritage report, which seeks to remember the transatlantic slave trade.

Léonora Miano was born in 1973 in Douala, on the coast of Cameroon, where she spent her childhood and adolescence before leaving for France in 1991 to attend university. In 2010, she founded the Mahogany NGO, dedicated to projects about the diaspora. With 14 literary works published in several languages, her work deals with racial issues, the aftermath of colonialism and issues related with the invisibility of minorities in France today.

Ynaê Santos holds a bachelor’s degree, a Master’s degree and a PhD in Social History from USP, analyzing the relationship between urban space and slavery in the New World. She is currently an assistant professor at CPDOC. She has experience in the field of History, with emphasis on History Teaching and History of the Americas, working mainly on the following subjects: slavery, Iberian America, creation of the National States, slave cities and history teaching.
