FGV hosts debate on the applications of Oral History methodology
The lecture will discuss the theoretical and methodological issues regarding the production and use of oral history interviews as historical sources.

FGV’s School of Social Sciences (CPDOC) will host the lecture titled “Paths of Oral History: methodological debates” on May 29, at 9:20 a.m. The subject will be presented by CPDOC professor Vivian Fonseca, who will discuss the theoretical and methodological issues regarding the production and use of oral history interviews as historical sources. Based on experiences gathered from different research projects, the lecturer will also compare the opportunities and challenges regarding the safekeeping and preservation of such oral or audiovisual documents.
The meeting is part of the lecture series titled “Applications of oral history: theoretical and methodological debates,” which aims to shed light onto the lecturers’ use of oral history in their work, sparking debate regarding the hardships, challenges and contributions related to the production and analysis of oral sources.
The first lecture of the series was held on May 24, featuring Mauro Amoroso, professor and researcher from UERJ, who spoke about the “Mobilizations, representations and peripheral resistances from Oral History.” The debate covered theoretical, methodological and practical aspects regarding the use of Oral History technique across three different research projects: one on photojournalism coverage of slums during the 1950’s and 60’s; one on the construction of memorials at the Borel slum; and another on law enforcement in slums during the 1970’s and 80’s.
