Filmmaker discusses ethnographic fashion production process in shantytowns
During the talk, Emílio Domingos will present the research project he carried out as part of the master’s in culture and territoriality, which discuss the use of cameras as mediators in fieldwork.

On September 30, at 10:30 am, the Visual Culture Study Laboratory at the FGV´s School of Social Sciences (FGV CPDOC) will host a presentation by anthropologist and filmmaker Emílio Domingos about the ethnographic results of a documentary he directed, “Favela É Moda.” This was the last film in a trilogy by the director about people’s bodies in Rio de Janeiro’s shantytowns and deprived suburbs. The event will be held in Room 418 in FGV’s main building (Praia de Botafogo, 190, Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro).
During the talk, Domingos will present the research project he carried out as part of the master’s in culture and territoriality he is doing at Fluminense Federal University, which discuss the use of cameras as mediators in fieldwork. The filmmaker investigated a modelling agency that arose 17 years ago, made up of young people in peripheral locations, which had the slogan “resistance fashion.” The initiative sought to confront esthetic standards established in the Brazilian fashion industry, questioning the almost ubiquitous presence of white, tall and thin models in fashion magazines and campaigns.
Emílio Domingos is a filmmaker, social scientist, researcher, scriptwriter and producer. He mainly works in the area of documentaries. He obtained an undergraduate degree in social science from Rio de Janeiro Federal University, majoring in visual anthropology, urban culture and youth. He is currently doing a master’s in culture and territoriality at Fluminense Federal University and he is the curator and moderator of Documenta-se Cineclube, a film club.
