Series of debates on Brazilian democracy to feature Eduardo Escorel and José Joffily
During the event, specialists, intellectuals and filmmakers will explore the history, evolution and challenges of Brazilian democracy from their different perspectives.

Fundação Getulio Vargas’ School of Social Sciences (FGV CPDOC), in partnership with the Rio de Janeiro State Legislative Assembly, is holding a seminar called “Democracy in Focus,” featuring a series of debates and a film showing. The public event will take place between August 2 and 4. It isn’t necessary to sign up beforehand to take part. During the event, specialists, intellectuals and filmmakers will explore the history, evolution and challenges of Brazilian democracy from their different perspectives.
The series of debates will happen on August 2 and 3 at the Rio de Janeiro State Legislative Assembly (Tiradentes Palace, Rua Primeiro de Março, Praça 15, Rio de Janeiro). On August 4, the film “Vocação do Poder” (“Vocation for Power”) will be shown in FGV’s main building (Praia de Botafogo, 190, Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro), followed by a debate with directors Eduardo Escorel and José Joffily.
There will be four panel discussions: “Representative Government in Brazil: From the Empire to the Vargas Era,” “Parties and Party Systems in Brazil,” “Political Institutions and Relations Between the Executive and Legislature in Brazil,” and “State Capacity and Public Policy.”
The seminar is part of a series of activities to launch the new Brazilian Democracy Cultural Center and Museum at Tiradentes Palace. The event is aimed at revisiting Brazilian political history and debating key topics in the public sphere.
