Talk presents research on life and work of artist and sports cartoonist Fernando Pieruccetti
Based on post-doctoral research conducted at FGV CPDOC, the talk will present Pieruccetti’s biography and work, seeking to make links between his output as a sports cartoonist and his career as an artist.

The mascots created as of the mid-1940s by Fernando Pieruccetti for soccer clubs in Minas Gerais are well known: a series of animals, including a fox, cockerel and rabbit, are part of fans’ imagination and they still often appear in Brazilian sports journalism. To discuss the life story of their creator, the Laboratory for Sports Studies (LESP) at Fundação Getulio Vargas’ School of Social Sciences (FGV CPDOC) will host a talk by Marcelino Rodrigues da Silva on October 24, at 4 pm, titled “Soccer and Modernism: the cartoons of Fernando Pieruccetti and the creation of animal mascots for Minas Gerais clubs.” The event will take place in Auditorium 406 in FGV’s main building (Praia de Botafogo, 190, Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro).
The mascots that represent the three most popular clubs in Minas Gerais (Cruzeiro, Atlético-MG and América) are well known, but few people know the story of their creator, who was also an artist who played a major role in the arrival of Modernism in the Minas Gerais art world. Based on post-doctoral research conducted at FGV CPDOC, the talk will present Pieruccetti’s biography and work, seeking to make links between his output as a sports cartoonist and his career as an artist. Silva will also reflect on the construction of Pieruccetti’s public image and the contradictory relations he established with the rights and responsibilities arising from his status as an author.
Marcelino Rodrigues da Silva is a professor in the Literature Department of Minas Gerais Federal University. He has a post-doctorate from FGV CPDOC.
