Amazon Fund: Study investigates how a collaborative platform impacts production

“Fostering sustainable production via the Amazon Fund collaborative platform,” an article written by Eduardo Bizzo (who has a professional master’s in public administration and a doctorate in administration from FGV EBAPE) in partnership with his tutor, Gregory Michener, a professor at the school and the coordinator of its Public Transparency Program, analyzes how the Amazon Fund Collaborative Platform is able to influence sustainable production initiatives in the region.

The paper, recently published in the journal Sustainable Development, presents results indicating that projects carried out through collaborative arrangements contribute significantly to increasing the value of output from preserved forests and agroforestry areas in the municipalities in question.

Between 2010 and 2017, there was an average annual increase in production of at least R$1 million per municipality. Although this increase was not immediate, as the positive impact on production became evident in the fourth to sixth year after the projects began, it was quite significant.

“Based on the experience of the Amazon Fund, the study offers empirical evidence of the potential of financing instruments for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) to strengthen bioeconomy value chains by promoting collaborative arrangements,” explains the researcher.

According to Bizzo, the results of the Amazon Fund (which acts as a collaborative platform, meaning a structure that promotes collaborative networks and projects over time) highlight the importance of public policies that encourage collaboration as a strategy for dealing with complex social and environmental challenges.

About the Amazon Fund

The Amazon Fund is a collaborative platform that raises donations to make non-refundable investments in efforts to prevent, monitor and combat deforestation in the Amazon region, and to promote the Amazon Rainforest’s conservation and sustainable use. It also supports the development of systems to monitor and control deforestation in the rest of Brazil and in other tropical countries.
