Free courses on art and human rights offered by FGV
Free and open to the public, this initiative aims to expand participants’ reflective and critical thinking skills
In line with its commitment to fostering debate surrounding art, culture and education, FGV Art has launched a series of courses that will run from July until the end of the year. The first course, called Art and Human Rights, took place between July 8 and 12, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The course brought together students, academics and opinion leaders, who addressed everything from artistic production to social, political and economic issues.
The theme of this first course was based on the premise of art as an inventive and reflective possibility and in this sense encompassing the idea of human rights – both by illustrating examples of human rights violations and by serving as an instrument for raising awareness and advancing this cause.
The classes, which occurred over the course of five days, featured four professors: Roberta Araújo of Rio de Janeiro State Judicial College (EMERJ) and Vanessa Berner, Manuel Gándara Carballido and Juliana Neuenschwander of Rio de Janeiro Federal University. They also involved film and documentary maker Beth Formaggini; Rio de Janeiro municipal government’s racial equality promotion coordinator, Yago Feitosa; a representative of NGO Redes da Maré, Millena Ventura; and FGV Knowledge researchers Lívia Ferreira, Isabella Dias and Thiago Serrano.
Second course
The next activity on FGV Art’s agenda of courses and seminars is titled Thinking About Another World. It will be taught by anthropologist Rita Segato and professors Tânia Rivera and Danú Gontijo. The free classes will take place on July 31, August 1 and 2, from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. To take part, you need to sign up in advance via the link on the @fgv.arte Instagram profile.
