Inflation for low-income Brazilian families rises in December
Six of the eight expense categories that comprise the index recorded a higher price change than in December.

The Consumer Price Index - Class 1 (IPC-C1) of December, developed by FGV’s Brazilian Institute of Economics (IBRE), recorded a variation of 0.19%, 0.13 percentage point (p.p.) higher than in November, when the index varied 0.06%. This marks a total upsurge of 6.22% between January and December 2016.
Six of the eight expense categories that comprise the index recorded a higher price change than in December: Food (-0.36% to 0.26%), Miscellaneous Expenses (-0.34% to 1.86%), Clothing (-0.36% to 0.81%), Transport (0.35% to 0.59%), Healthcare and Personal Care (0.37% to 0.52%), and Education, Reading, and Recreation (0.56% to 0.86%). The highlights in these groups were the following items: Dairy products (-4.26% to -2.06%), cigarettes (-0.84% to 3.31%), clothing (-0.35% to 0.92%), gasoline (-0.13% to 2.21%), beauty salon (0.76% to 1.43%), and musical performance (0.74% to 2.32%).
On the other hand, the Housing (0.39% to -0.69%) and Communication (0.10% to 0.07%) groups recorded lower price variations. Within these expense classes, the following items stand out: Household power rate (1.25% to -5.13%) and monthly cable TV fee (1.86% to 0.35%).
The next IPC-C1 will be released on February 6.
