Monitoring by the Cesta de Consumo Neogrid & FGV IBRE platform shows that of the 18 foodstuffs in the basic food basket, margarine and soybean oil stand out with increases in the eight capitals covered by the survey.

The average price of the basic food consumption basket in December 2024 increased compared to the previous month in five of the eight capital cities analyzed monthly by the Cesta de Consumo Neogrid & Instituto Brasileiro de Economia (FGV IBRE) platform.
Brasília and Manaus were the cities with the biggest increases in basket prices, 6.5% and 4.9% respectively. The cities with the biggest falls were Salvador and Fortaleza, with variations of -3.7% and -1.3%, respectively.
The most expensive basic consumer basket continues to be in Rio de Janeiro (R$1,033.34), followed by São Paulo (R$984.07) and Fortaleza (R$841.14). On the other hand, Belo Horizonte (R$686.43), Curitiba (R$738.23) and Manaus (R$816.77) were the cities identified with the lowest purchase costs.
Of the 18 foodstuffs in the basic food basket, margarine and soybean oil stood out with increases in the eight capitals covered by the survey.

“The rise in the price of soybean oil and margarine is being driven by domestic demand, mainly from the food industry, which has been trying to secure vegetable oil as a raw material in competition with biofuels, which have soybean oil as a component. In addition, the national soybean harvest is still suffering from the effects of the weather, reducing the supply of oil on the domestic market and, as a consequence, we have a rise in prices,” commented Anna Carolina Veiga Fercher, Head of Customer Success and Insights at Neogrid.
In addition to these factors, the rise in fuel prices, which make freight more expensive, also contributes to this scenario of a rise in the basic food basket; the devaluation of the exchange rate, which makes national exports more competitive on the foreign scene, particularly agricultural products; the fall in the unemployment rate, which contributes to an increase in demand for goods and services; and the seasonality of the end-of-year festivities. Not forgetting the weather conditions that have been changing the Rio de Janeiro, December 1, 2024. scenario and directly impacting on the composition of food prices in recent months.
