Social networks and history: new research possibilities
FGV’s School of Social Sciences (CPDOC) will host the lecture titled ‘Social network analysis and history’, in Rio de Janeiro on December 18.

On December 18, starting at 2 p.m., the Digital Humanities Lab (LHuD) of FGV’s School of Social Sciences (CPDOC) will host the lecture titled ‘Social network analysis and history’ at Casa Acervo (Archive House - Rua Jornalista Orlando Dantas, 60. Botafogo). The event’s guest speaker is historian Ivo Veiga, whose research employs various methods to examine different research problems and puzzles: social network analysis, event analysis, quantitative and qualitative textual analysis, counting data models, and correlation analysis.
The lecture will address the use of social network analysis in history. Building upon the premise that individuals and institutions are part of a network of relationships and bonds of a dynamic nature, the researcher will address the multitude of possibilities for analyzing historical processes provided by this emerging field. The presentation will discuss fundamental concepts, in addition to analytical tools and capabilities in the development of empirical work, exploring documentary files, text or oral sources.
Ivo Veiga is a researcher of History and Social Science with interest in democratization, revolutions, conflicts, comparative institutional analysis, and innovation processes. He holds a degree in History from the School of Social Sciences and Humanities of Universidade Nova de Lisboa (Portugal), a Master’s degree in Sociology from University of Reading (UK), and a PhD in Political Science from University College London (UK).
