Condor Camp: FGV students take part in international event on humanitarian problems
Seven FGV students were selected to fill 17 slots allocated to Brazilians to take part in the third edition of Condor Camp, an annual international event that tackles humanitarian problems. This year’s edition took place in Mexico City, from February 10 to 15. All seven FGV students are studying at the School of Applied Mathematics (FGV EMAp) and were awarded scholarships from the Center for the Development of Mathematics and Science (FGV CDMC).
Juan Belieni, Ana Carolina Erthal, Fredson Aguiar, Lucas Emanuel Resck, João Pedro Donasolo, João Felipe Vilas and Vítor Matheus were the students representing FGV. In addition, João Lucas Duim and João Pedro Tambosi, participants in previous editions, acted as mentor and facilitator, respectively.
They also had the opportunity to take part in the Latin American Effective Altruism Conference, where they were able to meet people from various countries who have dedicated their lives to solving humanity’s most pressing problems, such as extreme poverty, pandemics and artificial intelligence risks.
Condor Camp is an annual immersion for highly talented young university students to discuss the world’s most critical problems and the future of humanity, and to hone the skills needed to solve them. In this edition, the focus was on artificial intelligence safety and highly qualified professionals from around the world participated.
There was an intensive series of activities, including governance and alignment masterclasses, workshops, career panels and “office hours” sessions. The participants also worked on project proposals to be completed after the end of the camp. The main theme of the event was artificial intelligence safety, covering technical issues and the establishment of policies to mitigate risks.
According to Ana Carolina Erthal, a student on FGV EMAp’s Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Program and an FGV CDMC scholarship holder, Condor Camp was a unique, intense and enriching experience:
“I had the opportunity to listen to AI safety experts from different parts of the world, share knowledge with students from various Brazilian universities and, above all, learn a lot and reflect on how to direct my own career to have an impact on global problems,” she says.
She emphasizes how happy she was to take part in Condor Camp:
“Participating in an international event as an FGV student gave me extreme satisfaction, especially knowing that everything I’ve learned from the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Program was essential to make the most of the event,” she adds.
