Seminar debates optimization and statistics applied to Brazilian Electricity Sector

The first day of the ‘Seminar on Optimization and Statistics Applied to the Brazilian Electricity Sector’ took place on January 11, at FGV’s Brazilian School of Public and Business Administration (EBAPE). The goal of the event was to promote extensive debate on models and methodologies applied to the sector, bringing together researchers and their contributions to the various existing challenges in Brazil. This first meeting focused on optimization models and had an audience specialized in the sector.

During the opening lecture, professor André Marcato, from Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF), introduced concepts of Stochastic Dynamic Programming, Stochastic Dual Dynamic Programming, future cost function estimation, and medium- and long-term planning and operation of the Brazilian Electricity Sector (SEB). The second lecture, by professor Ivo Silva Jr., also from UFJF, discussed bio-inspired optimization methods and how they can be applied to the seasonal adjustment of assured energy and calibration of rain-flow models.

After a brief interval, Larissa Resende, from FGV Energy, began the third presentation discussing issues related to the storage of natural gas and potential benefits to the sector. André Lawson, also from FGV Energy, broke down the impacts on the system’s operation when the framework of disclosure of uncertainties and the decision-making process employed in the planning are based on an optimistic view of reality. PUC-RJ’s Alexandre Street gave the last lecture of the day, showing the cost of inconsistency between the models and operational reality.

The second day of the event will be held on January 18, focusing on statistics applied to the electricity sector. The following lecturers are confirmed: Alessandro Soares, from PSR, Guilherme Pereira, from FGV Energy, Ana Paula Delfino, Paula Maçaira, Reinaldo Castro Souza, Fernando Cyrino, and Yasmin Cyrillo (PUC-RJ).
