Artificial Intelligence in the Judiciary: the most complete research on the subject

In December, the Center for Judicial Innovation, Administration and Research (CIAPJ) at FGV Knowledge published a study called “Technology applied to conflict management in the Brazilian judiciary, focusing on artificial intelligence.” This report on artificial intelligence, coordinated by Justice Luis Felipe Salomão of the Superior Court of Appeals, is the most comprehensive study ever undertaken on this subject. The overall aim was to learn about the use of artificial intelligence in Brazilian courts.

The specific objectives were to learn about AI projects and their functionalities, the current state of technology, AI’s impacts, and its expected and achieved results. This data was analyzed to verify AI’s effects on courts’ speed, efficiency and productivity.

The report relates to the first phase of this study, which compiled data on AI initiatives at each court and analyzed their implementation stages. The second phase will continue in 2021 and update the data already collected, as well as analyze other aspects of the use of AI involving the judiciary.

The data presented in the first stage of the research indicates that approximately half of Brazil’s courts are developing artificial intelligence projects or have already implemented them. The courts’ own internal teams are responsible for these projects, either alone or through partnerships with other courts, led by the National Justice Council and Superior Labor Justice Council.

Through this study, it was possible to verify that AI is a great ally in making the Brazilian judiciary more productive, effective and better quality.
