Fake News Bill: Webinar looks at challenges involved in regulating social networks
The purpose is to debate risks and opportunities related to social media messages, in an attempt to reduce the impact of disinformation on electoral processes and consequently on democracy.
Fundação Getulio Vargas’ Department of Public Policy Analysis (FGV DAPP) is holding a webinar called “The Fake News Bill: The Challenge of Regulating Social Networks,” on June 3, at 2 pm, on FGV’s YouTube channel. The purpose is to debate risks and opportunities related to social media messages, in an attempt to reduce the impact of disinformation on electoral processes and consequently on democracy.
The webinar will discuss the challenge of fighting fake news on digital media in general while defending freedom of expression. During the event, FGV DAPP will present the results of a study that explored social network debate regarding the regulation of instant messaging platforms and services in Brazil.
The study compiled and processed Twitter posts related to instant messaging regulation. This issue is not just of concern in Brazil but is also part of the scope of work of FGV DAPP’s Digital Democracy Project, which is supported by the German Embassy in Brasilia.
Amaro Grassi, FGV DAPP’s coordinator, will give the opening remarks. The speakers will be Alexandra Geese, member of the European Parliament; Orlando Silva, federal representative; Ricardo Campos, lecturer at Goethe University, Frankfurt; and Bruna Martins dos Santos, an activist and member of the Rights on the Internet Coalition. The moderator will be João Brant, the coordinator of the Disinformation Project.
The webinar will feature broadcasts in Portuguese, English and German and it will be hosted on the YouTube channels of FGV and the German Embassy. The event is taking place in partnership with the Disinformation Project and the Legal Grounds Institute. It is also supported by the German Embassy in Brasilia.
