Seminar promotes debate on regulating water use in Rio de Janeiro
The event, promoted by FGV and Cedae, brings together important speakers for contributions and debates on water management, regulatory bodies and social impacts.
The Water Use Regulation Seminar, organized by FGV Conhecimento and the Rio de Janeiro State Water and Sewage Company (Cedae), will bring together authorities and managers from the public and private sectors to debate water management in the city of Rio de Janeiro. The event takes place in the context of Cedae's 50th anniversary and World Water Day (March 22), on March 24, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at the Fundação Getulio Vargas Cultural Center, at Praia de Botafogo, 186, Rio de Janeiro.
Government officials, specialists, social managers and leaders from the public and private sectors will be meeting to discuss issues for tackling the challenges of access to water that affect the population of Rio de Janeiro. The opening of the event will be attended by the governor of Rio de Janeiro, Claudio Castro, the president of the Legislative Assembly of Rio de Janeiro (Alerj), Rodrigo Bacellar, the national secretary for environmental sanitation, Leonardo Picciani, and the president of Cedae, Aguinaldo Ballon.
Water governance in Rio de Janeiro involves the management and sustainable use of resources to meet the population's growing demand for water, while at the same time preserving aquatic ecosystems. Water scarcity, aggravated by problems such as pollution and the disorderly growth of urban areas, has generated serious social impacts. The population of outlying communities, for example, faces difficulties in accessing drinking water, and poor sanitation conditions contribute to the proliferation of diseases, aggravated by the effects of climate change.
Among the themes of the panels throughout the morning will be the role of justice and public institutions, as well as land issues and structuring actions in communities and favelas. In addition to the main theme of the regulatory use of water, data on the impact of crime on education, health and society will also be discussed, as well as the importance of the media's role in raising public awareness. Water management and the future of Rio de Janeiro will be the subject of one of the panels, which will include representatives from the National Water Agency, the MPRJ, Agenersa, among others.
