On December 11 and 12, FGV Art welcomed eighth graders from Vicente Licínio Cardoso Municipal School to visit an exhibition called “The Fourth Constructive Generation in Rio de Janeiro.” This school in Rio de Janeiro’s Praça Mauá is focused on the visual arts and it caters to students who live in the neighborhood of Gamboa and the Morro do Pinto and Morro da Providência shanty towns in downtown Rio. The visit, supported by the municipal government, marked the start of an educational program that will run throughout 2024, including a series of visits and workshops.
FGV Art has a team of educators and mediators to guide the public and create activities aimed at different age groups and contexts. During this week’s visits, the students were invited to share the knowledge they had worked on throughout the year in the school’s own art workshops and to interpret the works they saw around them in the light of their experiences and repertoire. As well as presenting the main concepts of the exhibition, the FGV Art team talked about the art system and the work of artists in Brazil.
Lucas Ururahy, one of the artists whose works are on display in “The Fourth Constructive Generation in Rio de Janeiro” exhibition, led a percussion workshop based on his work “Playing a Boat” – a boat equipped with PVC pipes for creating sound experiences, which was set up for a time outside FGV’s main building. He also encouraged the students to collectively paint a canvas. The two works are now in the gallery’s storage room, waiting to be shown to the students again next year, when they will be in the ninth grade.
