IVAR/FGV: IBRE launches residential rent index
The goal is to measure the evolution of rents and fill a gap in the national statistics in this area.

On Tuesday, January 11, 2022, at 8 am, on its website, Fundação Getulio Vargas’ Brazilian Institute of Economics (FGV IBRE) will launch the Residential Rent Index (IVAR/FGV). This new indicator will be calculated using data collected from contracts signed by tenants and landlords in four large cities (Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Porto Alegre and Belo Horizonte), obtained by FGV IBRE from real estate administration firms.
The goal is to measure the evolution of rents and fill a gap in the national statistics in this area. The index uses negotiated rents rather than advertised figures as a basis for calculation. Data such as rents in new contracts and adjustments to existing ones, as well as the characteristics of each property, are considered. The statistical methodology used will provide a robust measurement of average changes in rents over time, better reflecting real demand and supply conditions in the residential rental market.
IVAR/FGV will be published monthly and as of January 2022 it will be part of FGV IBRE’s fixed calendar of index, indicator and survey results.
