FGV hosts strategic debates with world leaders in support of G20 agenda
Panel discussions covered topics related to the priorities defined by the Brazilian G20 presidency, namely fighting hunger and poverty in a global context of energy transition and sustainable development.
On Sunday, November 17, four world leaders took part in panel discussions held by FGV’s International Affairs Division in support of the Brazilian G20 summit agenda. The theme of the panels was aligned with the priorities defined by the Brazilian G20 presidency: fighting hunger and poverty in a global context of energy transition and sustainable development.
Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, and Cyril Ramaphosa, president of South Africa, took part in a joint panel in which they discussed the importance of financing for the energy transition. South Africa will hold the next G20 presidency. The just energy transition is a high-priority topic for the country and the African continent, and cooperation with the European Union is key to guaranteeing investments in renewable energy.
Jonas Gahr Store, prime minister of Norway, emphasized Norwegian cooperation to combat deforestation in countries such as Brazil, Colombia and Indonesia. During his speech, he announced a donation of US$60 million to the Amazon Fund.
Justin Trudeau, prime minister of Canada, which is set to take over the G7 presidency, highlighted the importance of combining economic growth with sustainable development, prioritizing adaptation to the challenges of climate change and public policies that generate incentives for innovation, with a focus on the low-carbon economy.
FGV participated actively in the Brazilian G20 activities, hosting academic conferences, the Brazilian G20 National Coordination Office and the official G20 accreditation center. FGV’s G20 Student Volunteering Program provided a unique opportunity for students to support and participate in this important diplomatic meeting.
