FGV president and delegation from Nigeria discuss project to modernize Nigerian agricultural sector
Expected to last 10 years and with an estimated budget of US$1.2 billion, the Green Imperative Project (GIP) is one of the largest international agricultural technology transfer projects, designed by FGV Europe with the support of Deutsche Bank.
On November 18, during the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, the president of Fundação Getulio Vargas, Professor Carlos Ivan Simonsen Leal, hosted a delegation from Nigeria led by the Nigerian Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (FMAFS) and including members of the Presidential Food Systems Coordinating Unit (PFSCU).
The meeting provided an opportunity to deepen FMAFS’ knowledge of FGV, strengthen mutual relations, explore collaboration opportunities and discuss subjects of common interest, such as the Green Imperative Project (GIP), one of the largest international agricultural technology transfer projects, designed by FGV Europe with the support of Deutsche Bank.
Work on designing the GIP began in 2018, with the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Nigerian Ministry of Agriculture and FGV Europe. Since then, the two parties have engaged in several significant discussions to move forward with its design. Expected to last 10 years and with an estimated budget of US$1.2 billion, the GIP is a cooperation initiative between Brazil and Nigeria that aims to modernize and strengthen the Nigerian agricultural sector by harnessing Brazilian tropical agriculture technology and knowledge. In addition, a new memorandum of understanding was signed, aimed at increasing Nigeria’s agricultural productivity by boosting the production of fertilizers and hybrid seeds and by expanding agricultural financing solutions.
The Nigerian delegation was composed of officials from FMAFS and PFSCU, the presidential office and representatives of the country’s private sector: Temitope Peter Fashedemi, permanent secretary at the Ministry of Agriculture; Marion Moon, agricultural technical assistant; Adenike Laoye, senior special assistant for finance and economics; Yasmin Mohammed, energy transition special assistant; Abiodun Yinusa, special advisor on agriculture and food security; Abdullahi Abubakar, director of the Federal Department of Agriculture; Garba Isimbabi, legal director; Ibrahim Alkali, special technical assistant; Jalwau Ahmadu Bello, agriculture and climate change special assistant; Khadijat Othman, production associate at PFSCU; Zainab Bello, support and engagement advisor at Shell Nigeria; Abubakar Sadiq Falulu, managing director of FaLGates; Usman Dantata, managing director of Sagad; and Aishatu Suraiya Hamidu, director of Sagad.
The meeting was attended by the following FGV Europe executives: Cleber Guarany, project manager and director of the GIP; Francisco Torres, finance and compliance advisor; Giuliano Senatore, technical project coordinator; Vanessa Africani, media relations specialist; Vitor Sawczuk, project manager; Sara Pais, international affairs manager; Marco Saverio Ristuccia, project manager; and Andrea Raccichini, project analyst.
