FGVces seeks dialogue with companies to strengthen sustainable production chains in the Caatinga
This initiative aims to fortify strategic chains in goat farming, fruit cultivation, agroecological cotton, and meliponiculture.

FGV’s Center for Sustainability Studies (FGVces) is enhancing dialogues with markets interested in acquiring organic and agroecological products from the Caatinga. The effort seeks to strengthen the strategic chains of goat farming, fruit cultivation, agroecological cotton, and meliponiculture, promoting not only these products' commercialization but also the sustainable development of the region.
According to Jéssica Chryssafidis, a researcher at FGVces and project manager, "fostering closer ties between companies and family farming cooperatives is a crucial strategy for promoting local development in the region." Additionally, traceability and transparency in the production chain confer competitive advantages on companies and ensure high-quality inputs for niche markets that prioritize sustainability and positive socio-environmental impact.
This action is part of the Programa Raízes da Caatinga (Caatinga Roots Program), established in 2021 by IDH in partnership with the Laudes Foundation. The program brings together stakeholders from the public, private, and civil society sectors in territorial commitments aimed at sustainable development, restoration, and conservation of the biome. Active in three regions of the Caatinga – Sertão do Pajeú (PE), Sertão do Cariri (PB), and Sertão do Apodi (RN) –, the program coordinates over 50 organizations around a strategy based on the pillars of Produce, Protect, and Include (PPI).
As part of the project, FGVces was hired to lead the market access strategy for cooperatives and associations of family agriculture, directly supporting the production chains of agroecological cotton, fruit cultivation, goat farming, and meliponiculture. The effort by FGVces aims to facilitate strategic connections between producers and potential buyers, ensuring that Caatinga's products reach markets that value quality, sustainability, and positive impact.
The project began in November 2024 and will continue until September 2025, with a dedicated work agenda to boost the Caatinga products' commercialization and strengthen the cooperatives' and associations' commercial strategies execution.
