Science and Technology Day: Student says her father is her greatest inspiration in the field
Fernanda Luísa Silva Gomes is a 6th year student at FGV EMAp and explains the decisive impact her childhood experiences with her father had on her choice of Data Science
October 16 is Science and Technology Day in Brazil. It’s a date to recognize and celebrate the essential role that scientific research and technological innovation play in the progress of society. To mark the occasion, Fernanda Luísa Silva Gomes, a third-year student at Fundação Getulio Vargas’ School of Applied Mathematics (FGV EMAp), shared the decisive impact that her childhood experiences with her father had on her choice to study data science at the school. He was her main reference and source of inspiration for entering this field.
Science and Technology Day honors all scientists, researchers and innovators who dedicate their lives to advancing knowledge and developing technological solutions. In times of new challenges, Fernanda Luísa is motivated by the desire to work in a dynamic and up-to-date technological area. “Using the knowledge I’ve acquired in this program, I’ll be able to become a competent professional. The program is innovative and has a lot of potential,” she says.
A math enthusiast, she loved solving and discussing problems with her father, her greatest inspiration in the area. “He always believed in my potential. When I had an exam and was nervous, he would say that someone had to get the highest mark, and that person could be me,” Fernanda recalls of her father’s constant support.

Who inspired you to study data science?
My decision to study data science was inspired by my father, a math teacher in elementary and high school education. During my childhood and adolescence, I loved to solve and discuss math problems with him. I admired the thoughts he had and the way he pushed me to study and learn.
For what reasons?
I remember when I was solving a problem that I thought was difficult, I asked him why the question couldn’t be simpler. He replied that if all problems were simple, there would only be white flip-flops, because they were easier to make. Although the answer seemed funny and strange, it made me realize the importance of studying and trying to solve complex problems.
What is your relationship with this person?
Our relationship is based on respect, affection and trust. I can always count on him whenever I have a problem.

What is your motivation regarding this program?
My motivation for the data science program is to work in a technological, dynamic and current area. In addition, using the knowledge acquired in the program, I will be able to become a competent professional. The program is innovative and has a lot of potential.
What are the program’s advantages and distinctive features?
The curriculum covers a variety of areas, such as optimization, natural language processing, modeling and visualization. The professors are extremely qualified and the different courses encourage students to practice what they have learned. Finally, there are projects and introductory scientific research aimed at broadening and enhancing students’ skills.
