2018 retrospective: Research that affected the country’s society

Two important fields in which FGV operates are the preservation of historical archives and collections of important personalities in the country’s history, and the development of economic indexes that serve as a parameter for various segments of society. In this sense, FGV’s School of Social Sciences (CPDOC) launched a virtual exhibit on former President Getúlio Vargas and political propaganda, and FGV’s Brazilian Institute of Economics (IBRE) launched the Inflation Portal.

2018 retrospective: Research that affected the country’s society

FGV’s prolific academic and scientific production was striking throughout the year. From September to the end of 2018, several projects started and a series of research, many with significant impact on the country’s society, had their findings presented to the public.

Biodiversity in the Amazon region is one of the greatest on the planet. A study by FGV’s School of Applied Mathematics (EMAp), in partnership with Fundação Oswaldo Cruz, researched the relationship between fish farming and the malaria epidemic. The applied research project, funded by FGV, aims to create a mathematical model to represent the relationship between artificial tanks and the transmission of the disease. The zika virus has also been the object of research. The report “Silent Voices: Women’s Experience with Zika Virus” was based on an integrated approach to public health and human rights, and seeks to present a broader understanding of the health crisis caused by the Zika virus.

Two important fields in which FGV operates are the preservation of historical archives and collections of important personalities in the country’s history, and the development of economic indexes that serve as a parameter for various segments of society. In this sense, FGV’s School of Social Sciences (CPDOC) launched a virtual exhibit on former President Getúlio Vargas and political propaganda, and FGV’s Brazilian Institute of Economics (IBRE) launched the Inflation Portal, a website that brings together information about the main inflation indicators in the country, in addition to presenting the public with an innovative functionality that allows the calculation of price variations in individual budgets.

A study by FGV Social – Center for Social Policy found that poverty and inequality increased in Brazil in the last four years, due to the severe economic crisis that devastated the country. Another study by the Center drew a comparison between the perception of Brazilians and the rest of the world. The phenomenon of migration also stood out in the world and definitively entered the agenda of public debate in Brazil in 2018. In this sense, FGV’s Public Policy Analysis Division (DAPP) launched the #observamigração platform.

Finally, a study on black intelligentsia, slavery and African heritage was contemplated by the Rio de Janeiro Research Foundation (FAPERJ), research that assesses the impact of technology on law firms, and the launch of the Diversity Program by FGV’s Rio de Janeiro Law School (Direito Rio) also stood out.
